Lagerkennlinie, Logistikperformance, Bestandsanalyse
On the Anthropogenic and Natural Injection of Matter into Earth's Atmosphere
Every year, more and more objects are sent to space. While staying in orbit
at high altitudes, objects at low altitudes reenter the atmosphere, mostly
disintegrating and adding material to the upper atmosphere. The increasing
number of countries with space programs, advancing commercialization, and
ambitious satellite constellation projects raise concerns about space debris in
the future and will continuously increase the mass flux into the atmosphere. In
this study, we compare the mass influx of human-made (anthropogenic) objects to
the natural mass flux into Earth's atmosphere due to meteoroids, originating
from solar system objects like asteroids and comets. The current and near
future significance of anthropogenic mass sources is evaluated, considering
planned and already partially installed large satellite constellations.
Detailed information about the mass, composition, and ablation of natural and
anthropogenic material are given, reviewing the relevant literature. Today,
anthropogenic material does make up about 2.8 % compared to the annual injected
mass of natural origin, but future satellite constellations may increase this
fraction to nearly 40 %. For this case, the anthropogenic injection of several
metals prevails the injection by natural sources by far. Additionally, we find
that the anthropogenic injection of aerosols into the atmosphere increases
disproportionately. All this can have yet unknown effects on Earth's atmosphere
and the terrestrial habitat.Comment: 24 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Advances in Space Researc
Biomechanical Rationale for a Novel Implant Design Reducing Stress on Buccal Bone
Modern implant designs should allow for adequate primary stability but limit mechanical
stress on buccal bone in order to prevent initial marginal bone loss. A dental implant characterized
by a shift in core diameter and thread geometry was evaluated. Polyurethane foam was used as bone
surrogate material and implant placement was performed measuring insertion torque and strain
development on buccal bone using strain gauges as well as primary stability by using damping
capacity assessments. An existing tapered bone-level implant was used as a control while the novel
experimental implant described above (n = 10) was used in the test group. Statistical analysis was
based on t-tests (α = 0.05). Both the maximum insertion torque (p = 0.0016) and maximum strain
development in buccal bone (p = 0.1069) were greater in control implants as compared to the novel
implant design. Moreover, in the control group, these were reached at a significantly later timepoint
of the insertion process, i.e., when the implant was almost fully seated (maximum insertion torque
p = 0.0001, maximum strain development p < 0.00001). The final insertion torque (p < 0.00001) and
final strain development (p = 0.0137) were significantly lower in the novel implant design while the
primary stability of both implant types did not differ significantly (p = 0.219). The novel implant
design allowed for a greater undersizing of osteotomies while not mechanically overstressing buccal
bone. Comparable primary stability was obtained from trabecular bone instead of compressing
cortical bone as occurs in conventional, existing tapered implant designs
Energy Storage Needs in Interconnected Systems Using the Example of Germany and Austria
The share of renewable energies on the net electricity consumption is rising steadily. Especially intermittent, non-controllable sources like wind and sun are gaining importance. With an installed amount of non-controllable power that exceeds the yearly peak load, situations can occur with a surplus of energy in electricity supply systems. This surplus will rise strongly with the share of fluctuating renewable energies on the net electricity consumption. A lot of studies and experts come to the conclusion that energy storage will be needed to handle these surpluses. The questions that still have to be answered are when and how. Especially the German electricity system will have very high storage needs because of a very strong and fast development of wind and solar power. There are a lot of technologies and approaches to overcome this problem. However, Pumped Hydro Energy Storage (PHES) systems are up to date the most efficient and economic bulk energy storage technology. On the one side there are no high potentials in natural sites for the installation of PHES schemes in Germany. On the other side the Austrian PHES system has still a very high potential. Up so far, the prospects are used just to a small amount. Especially the seasonal Hydro Energy Storage (HES) still holds a very high potential. In this paper the combination of the Austrian and the German energy supply system will be investigated with respect to the development of renewable energies. The overall energy storage needs are evaluated for each country as well as in the combined system, taking also into account the development and the influence of the transmission system capacity between the two countries
X-ray monitoring of the radio and gamma-ray loud Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxy PKS 2004-447
We present preliminary results of the X-ray analysis of XMM-Newton and Swift
observations as part of a multi-wavelength monitoring campaign in 2012 of the
radio-loud narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxy PKS 2004-447. The source was recently
detected in gamma-rays by Fermi/LAT among only four other galaxies of that
type. The 0.5-10 keV X-ray spectrum is well-described by a simple absorbed
powerlaw (photon index ~ 1.6). The source brightness exhibits variability on
timescales of months to years with indications for spectral variability, which
follows a 'bluer-when-brighter' behaviour, similar to blazars.Comment: Proceedings for the 'Jet 2013' conference. Includes 3 pages, 3
